| EBC's primary mission is to bring timely
news and entertainment to ethnic Chinese households around the globe.
In just one decade of operations, the company has been able to
expand to more than 50 countries worldwide, with Taiwan as its headquarters.
EBC's core strength is in Mandarin Chinese broadcasting. However,
as its ETTV-branded channels develop local audiences in countries
as diverse as Thailand, Panama, and the United States, providing
local-language content is both essential and inevitable. The availability
of news and entertainment content in Thai, Spanish, and English
(and any number of other languages) helps EBC fulfill its mission
to second- and third-generation diaspora, who might have difficulty
understanding their heritage language (Mandarin Chinese). Eventually,
EBC expects its role to expand -- to serve a wider non Chinese-speaking
audience with an interest in Asia-focused news and entertainment.
At the same time, EBC is acquiring a vast database of audiovisual
footage ¡V through firsthand news gathering and program production,
as well as through actively seeking out archival footage relating
to historical developments over the past century. In the future,
EBC's digital archives will be the first stop for media organizations,
filmmakers and others seeking audiovisual records of the region's
history.
While EBC has shown a matchless competitive drive in Taiwan, cooperation
is also essential to fulfilling its mission. The company has signed
strategic cooperation agreements with a variety of the world's leading
international news media, including CNN, BBC, TV5, NHK, CCTV, APTN
and Reuters. These arrangements enhance EBC's ability to fulfill
its mission by ensuring that ETTV content can be disseminated through
second and third parties, effectively extending its global reach.
In addition, EBC gains access to content provided by some of its
partners to enhance the quality of programming it brings to its
global audience through its satellite and cable network.
Beyond its primary mission, EBC strives to be a good corporate
citizen. The company's charitable efforts have for the most part
focused on education, for example through scholarships for underprivileged
children, and campaigns to increase awareness of the potential contributions
that can be made to Taiwanese society by immigrants.
